116 valuable naked reprints from JEOR

Review Date: June 30, 2008
Reviewer: S. Antoniou, Athens, GREECE
A largeshape hardcover, very well bound, with 394 plain-paper pages and no dead space, edited by Brian Lawrence. It contains 116 reprints published in the Magazine THE JOURNAL OF ESSENTIAL OIL RESEARCH (JEOR) between March/April 1989 and Nov/Dec 2003 (almost 5 full years).
There is nothing else in the Vol than the 116 reprints, presented in chronological sequence, and the Table of Contents in the beginning. So, two lacks are immediately obvious.
First, lack of an INDEX at the end to facilitate location of each ess oil. The titles in the Contents act as a kind of finding list, however the ess oil names are not distinctly printed there (e.g. bold), which would serve this function.
And second, lack of an INTRODUCTION, which would explain the selection of these reprints over others, as the 116 reprints do not deal with 116 different ess oils, but with fewer, because some ess oils are over-represented (e.g. rose scented geranium, cypress, myrtle etc).
In addition, the book title (FRAGRANCE OILS AND EXTRACTS) is rather diffuse, as one could understand oils or oily substances (also synthetic) used in fragrance creation. Much clearer would be the title VOLATILE [or ESSENTIAL] OILS AND AROMATIC EXTRACTS.
A subtitle (especially on the inner title page) would also facilitate things, for example: [Selected] Reprints 1989-2003 from JEOR.
Apart from these, the substance quality of the Vol is high, same as that of the (expensive) magazine JEOR, thus this collection on the composition of selected essential oils is valuable, enlightening those studying or working on them.
